It was 1986. My mother asked me to go to my uncle’s house to borrow some rice. I never expected him to give us a full ten kilos. But when my mother opened the sack, she suddenly covered her face and began to cry uncontrollably… The reason sent chills down my spine, and it’s something I will never forget for the rest of my life. 😱 😨
In 1986, I had just turned twelve.
At that time, poverty was widespread. Our family meals usually consisted of a little rice mixed with beans or ground corn, along with a light soup made from wild herbs we gathered in the fields. My father had left us a few years earlier, and my mother was raising my two sisters and me alone.
That day, it was the end of winter. Cold wind passed through the tin roofs of the old houses in our neighborhood. I saw my mother sitting beside the almost empty rice container. She picked up the last grains with her fingers and let out a deep sigh.
She told me to go to my uncle and ask for some rice, and that she would find a way to repay it the next day.
I took an old cloth bag and went outside. The road was dusty, and the cold wind hit my face. My uncle’s house was just a few doors away from ours. He was my father’s older brother and lived alone.
When I stood in front of his door, my heart was pounding. Asking for help made me feel ashamed. But my uncle didn’t reproach me. He simply looked at me for a long time. In his eyes, there was something strange… sadness and compassion.
After a moment, he turned around and went inside. I thought he would come back with just a small amount of rice. But he returned with a large sack of about ten kilos. He handed it to me and told me to take it to my mother.
I was so happy I could hardly believe it. I thanked him and walked back home carrying the heavy sack. On the way, I barely felt the cold anymore. I was only thinking that we would finally eat warm rice that evening.
As I entered, I called out to my mother joyfully.
She came out quickly and helped me put the sack down. But when she opened it… her hand suddenly froze. Inside, there was a small wooden box and a carefully tied cloth pouch.
I watched in surprise. But my mother began to tremble. Inside, there was a letter, yellowed with age.
She started reading it. After a few lines, tears began to fall from her eyes. She covered her face and broke down into intense sobbing.
I had never seen her cry like that. My heart tightened.
I asked her what was wrong.
She didn’t answer right away. Then she handed me the letter. I looked at the handwriting… uneven, but strangely familiar. And in that moment, I understood. It was my father’s writing.

My mother remained silent for a long time, staring at the letter. Then suddenly, she stood up and began to hurriedly gather her things. Her face had changed — there was not only pain, but also fear in her eyes.
I didn’t understand what was happening. In the letter, he wrote that he had gotten into trouble with certain people and had been forced to “disappear” to protect us. He had entrusted this secret to his brother, asking him to pass it on to us at the right time.
The letter also said that all those years he had been caught up in those problems, but that he had finally managed to free himself and could now return. He had told his brother, but his brother didn’t want to tell us anything, because from the very beginning he had not accepted my mother as his brother’s wife.
I couldn’t believe it… at last, we would be able to live like a normal family.
